There are several species and subspecies of wild rice (Zizania), but the one grown for food production is Z. palustris, although it is frequently incorrectly classified as Z. aquatica (16). Z. texana is an endangered plant found only in Texas, Z. latifolia is found in the Eastern hemisphere and frequently viewed as an invasive weed, and Z. aquatica is a small-grained wild type found in North America (15, 18, 20, 22).
