OsMADS13 is highly expressed in developing ovules, its amino acid sequence shows significant homology with ZAG2, a maize MADS-box gene, which is also expressed mainly in ovule. OsMADS13 is mapped to chromosome 12, which is syntenic to two maize regions where ZAG2 and its paralogous gene ZMM1 have been mapped. OsMADS13 is the ortholog of Arabidopsis STK gene, Petunia FBP7 and FBP11, all belong to D-lineage genes. Mutation of OsMADS13 is female sterile, the ovules are converted into carpelloid structures, the flower is inderterminate, these results suggested the OsMADS13 has a function in floral meristem determinacy.
