GRAMENE GENEGR:0200254
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Disease lesions vs. yellowish flecks (Hm1, resistant) on leaves with
Cochliobolus carbonum race 1. Dominant Hm1, resistance (yellow flecks) to
Cochliobolus carbonum (=Bipolaris zeicola; Helminthosporium carbonum) race 1. In
hm1/hm1 plants, severity of disease lesions is determined by the allelic state
at the hm2 locus, but Hm1 alleles are epistatic to hm2 (Nelson and Ullstrip 1964
J Hered 55:194). There are also alleles (hm1-A and hm1-B) conditioning
intermediate degrees of resistance in plants that are also hm2/hm2. (O. Nelson)
Hm1 encodes for NADPH-dependent reductase whose function is to reduce (detoxify)
the HC-toxin that the fungus produces to cause disease in susceptible maize. The
locus has been cloned from B73 (Johal and Briggs 1992 Sci 258:985). This gene
was originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map position was displayed
on the maize bins map if feasible.
