Condolences

In memory of Dr. Nelson E. Jodon

Dr. Nelson E. Jodon, one of the pioneers of rice genetics, passed away in Crowley on January 4th, 1993, at the age of 89.

He made a remarkable contribution to rice genetics as shown in the dedication presented in RGN Vol. 1. 1984. Dr. Jodon graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Master of Science degree in 1932. Then, he worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture at the Louisiana State University, Rice Experiment Station for about 50 years as an aeronomist. In 1973, he was presented an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Louisiana State University, and the Superior Service Medal from the USDA.

He continued to work with rice genetics and breeding at the Rice Experiment Station. He presented the first comprehensive linkage maps in this article, "Present status of rice genetics" published in 1955. He has authored many papers and articles on rice research and his expertise in the field was respected world-wide.

He was characterized as a gentleman and a gentle man, and beloved by all rice scientists. (by T. Kinoshita)

In memory of Dr. Tsutsumi Nagamatsu

Dr. Tsutsumi Nagamatsu, Professor emeritus of Kyushu University, passed away in Fukuoka on January 30th, 1993 at the age of 88. He was Professor of Plant Breeding in Kyushu University (1955-1968), and devoted himself to the evaluation and preservation of world-wide collections of rice genetic stocks. Such contribution of him was a base of Rice Genetic Stock Center of Rice Genetics Cooperative, Kyushu University, and has promoted the development of rice genetic research. (by N. Iwata)
