Appendix. Notes on Genetic Engineering

The editors regret that no report of the Committee on Genetic Engineering is available for this volume of RGN.

In relation to genetic engineering in higher plants, a symposium and workshop on "Gene manipulation for plant improvement in developing countries" was held at Kuala Lumpur from 30 November to 3 December, 1987, by the Society for Advancement of Breeding Researches in Asia and Occania (SABRAO).

"Second International Symposium on Genetic Manipulation in Crops" will be held at International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT, Mexico) from 29 to 31 August, IL988. There will be sessions on anther culture and haploid breeding, protoplast culture and plant regeneration, protoplast fusion and somatic hybrids, distant hybridization, somaclonal variation, endosperm culture, and international collaboration in genetic manipulation of crop plants. RGC members interested in this symposium may write to: Dr. L. A. Sitch, IRRI,P. 0. Box 933, Manila, Philippines.
