- whitish to translucent anthers; 0=yellowish indehiscent anthers;
yellowish partially dehiscent anthers; +=perfectly dehiscent anthers.
The Gambiaca cyto-setrile line YAR-AI-ZHAO A which is generally considered as
perfectly sterile, is partially sterile at Goiania. The anthers are perfectly
dehiscent, and the spikelet fertility is about 20%. Nevertheless, during winter
planting in greenhouse, sometimes we have observed perfectly sterile YAR-AI-
Zhao A plants with whitish to translucent anthers which suggest that
environments may influence the levels of sterility in this line.
YAR-AI-ZHAO A, when crossed with Indica rice, generally gives fertile or partially fertile hybrids with yellowish anthers which are perfectly or partially dehiscent. This line, when crossed with Japonica rice gives perfectly sterile plants with whitish to translucent anthers.
We have sterilized some upland (Japonica) varieties (IRAT 103, IRAT 141, IRAT 144, IRAT 313, IRAT 314) with Gambiaca Cytoplasm. All these varieties are now perfectly sterile with whitish anthers. The sterilized variety IRAT 103 was crossed with some upland (Japonica) rices. Nearly all the hybrids obtained were perfectly sterile with whitish to translucent anthers These observations suggest that, for Gambiaca cytoplasm, restorer varieties are available among Indica rices and maintainer varieties among Japonica rices.
