In memory of Professor Shi-Cheng Lin
Mr. Shi-Cheng Lin, a Research Professor of Chinese Academy
of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), passed away on 6 May 1997, at the age
of 79 in Beijing. Professor Lin headed the Crop Cultivation Department
of CAAS from 1959 and worked on cultivation, ecology and genetic resources.
In 1972, he was appointed as head of Rice Breeding Department. He served
as leader of National Rice Project in China from 1980 to 1990. His major
interest was on breeding rice varieties with resistance to diseases and
insects and good grain quality. Rice varieties developed under his leadership
such as Zhong Dan Nos 1,2 and 3, Thong Xi Nos 5, 8 and 121 and Zhong Bai
No. 4 were widely grown in North and Northeast China. He was the first
to establish of GEU (Genetic Evaluation and Utilization) team for rice
improvement in China.
Professor Lin served as editor of book series entitled “Rice
Varieties and their Genealogy in China and Rice in China”. He served as
a member of Chinese varietal approval committee and Chief Advisor of Acta
Agronomica Sinica and Chinese Journal of Rice Science. Professor Lin served
as a member of IRRI’s board of Trustees from 1978 to 1983.
He was a thorough gentleman and kind person and was loved
by all who knew him well.
