17. A new gene for virescence character in rice

We observed a spontaneous virescent mutant in the rice cultivar
Angasan planted in our hybridization nursery. The seedlings exhibit fine
white stripes which disappear before transplanting (21 days after seeding).
The white stripes appear again on the leaf sheaths of flagleaf at flowering.
The uppermost internode which bears the panicle is milky white in color.
We crossed the mutant with 1R36 and F1 plants were normal. The F2 population
segregated into 76 normal to 20 virescent plants. Thus, the virescence
character is due to a single recessive gene. We made allele tests with
the other mutants of similar phenotype: 11 known virescence mutants, 2
known fine stripe mutants, the rfs mutant, and 8 known striped leaf mutants
(Kinoshita, 1995). The F1 plants of all hybrids were normal (Table 1).
The new gene is designated as v12(t).
