II. List of gene symbols

Rules for rice gene symbolization were decided on the occasion of the International Rice Genetics Symposium in May 1986. Since then, 112 genes have been newly registered in accordance with the rule 7. Problems of naming and usages are discussed in several reports from coordinators which are mentioned in each volume of RGN, and guidelines for nomenclature of cloned genes or DNA fragments were proposed in RGN 8: 51-53.

Rice genes published hitherto are listed alphabetically in Table 1 and there is another table classified by the different traits (Table 2). There are many unauthorized genes which were marked with asterisks. Above all prompt registration with the convener is expected in accordance with the rule 7 (see RGN 3: 4-5). The convener welcomes consultation and suggestions on this matter.

There still exist several problems about naming and usages such as genes for heading or flowering date (E and Ef), sterility and lethality(S,s,D,L etc.), male sterility (classification and allelism test), name of seed proteins (Glu,glup, pro etc.), isozymes (cloned genes) and designation of molecular markers and QTLs. I hope to discuss these problems in the Third International Rice Genetics Symposium and other occasions. I hope the coordinators contribute to RGN about the outcome of discussions.
