Anther culture was conducted with the common wild rice of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to examine how the frequency of callus induction and that of plantlet regeneration were correlated with morphological types. About 63,000 anthers from 28 strains of wild rice were inoculated, and 1,447 pieces of calli were obtained. The induction frequencies were 0-15.3% in wild and 0-8.5% in semi- wild types. Many albino and 22 green plantlets were obtained from the anther calli. The regeneration frequencies of albino plantlets were 18.8-71.4% of the calli obtained in wild and 9.1-58.8% in semi-wild types, and those of green plantlets were 2.6-8.2% in wild and 5.9-13.3% in semi-wild types. A part of the plantlets examined showed either the haploid (n = 12) or the diploid (2n = 24) chromosome number in the root tips. Green plantlets were obtained from four strains which had resistance to rice blast, resistance to bacterial leaf blight, high protein content, and cold tolerance, respectively.
