In RGN vol. 2 we requested RGC members to send us the seeds of available genetic stocks and the information about them. However, to-date we have not received any seeds or the list of stocks available from the members. We have received several requests for seeds of marker stocks and trisomics from rice researchers of many countries.
A supplement list of marker genes supplied by the Committee on Gene Symbolization, Nomenclature and Linkage Groups is attached. The committee has decided to establish two Rice Genetic Stock Centers and an announcement regarding this is appended.
I. Rice Genetic Stock Centers
The Committee on Genetic Stocks has established two Rice Genetic Stock Centers to ensure the proper maintenance of genetic and chromosome marker stocks including the trisomics and translocations and to ensure their availability to world rice geneticists. The Centers will be located at the Plant Breeding Department, International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines and at Plant Beeding Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu University, Japan. The stocks in the background of materials adapted to tropical environments will be maintained at IRRI and those in the background of temperate materials at Kyushu. These Centers will store the gene stocks under long term-storage conditions (low temperature and humidity) and will issue periodic lists of available marker stocks in RGN. When a new gene is reported, the authors should send the seeds to either of the stock centers. The seeds of marker stocks will be available to all the rice researchers.
