GRAMENE GENEGR:0200681
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Gene-specific cDNA probe; low expression in bundle sheath cells (aka cab1).
Mapped by Wright and Helentjaris (1988). Bansal and Bogorad (1993) identified a
mesophyll specifying region in this gene. Preferential expression in mesophyll
cells results from the action of suppression in the bundle sheath cells and
promotion in the mesophyll cells. A study by La Rocca et al (2000) showed that
the transcription of lhcb1 is not strictly dependent on chloroplast integrity,
and can still occur in severely phototo-oxidized organelles. However, gene
transcription is inversely proportional to thylakoid membrane damage. Contains a
159 bp region (-1026 to -868) which confers mesophyll specificity. This gene was
originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map position was displayed on
the maize bins map if feasible.
