GRAMENE GENEGR:0200064
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Brown kernel, brown embryo; seedling lethal. Conditions the accumulation of a
dark brown pigment in the aleurone, endosperm, embryo and scutellum of
homozygous mutant kernels. Mutant kernels are of normal size, germinate to
produce seedlings that are pale green to green, and then become necrotic and die
at the 4- to 7-leaf stage. Carotenoids and anthocyanins are not affected.
Alleles are known which have variant kernel size, pigmentation, and embryo
morphology (brn1-Nelson: small, dark brown kernel, embryo lethal, abnormal
embryo morphology; brn1-3071: small, pale brown kernel, embryo lethal, abnormal
embryo morphology). (P. Stinard). Duplicate factor with brn2; many inbred lines
are homozygous for brn2. Genetic 2005 3 coordinates determined from these
recombination and map data: g2 -16- brn1; brn1 -22- dek5 -23- lg3; brn1 -19- d1
-21- lg3; see MaizeGDB ID:106025; 106039; 106045. This gene was originally
curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map position was displayed on the maize
bins map if feasible.
