Description Greenish dark yellow seedling. Various alleles, seedling lethal to near normal
depending on allele and background. Null level is recessive bright yellow lethal
(oy1-1040, Mascia and Robertson 1980 J Hered 71:19); intermediates oy1-ref and
oy1-tn are dark yellow green and may approach normal green color at maturity.
Dominant yellow green alleles range in phenotype--in heterozygotes from bright
yellow green (Oy1-1459) through moderate yellow green (Oy1-1460), and in
homozygotes from pale yellow green to yellow lethal. Intermediate alleles
produce no chlorophyll b. Oy1-700 fails to convert protoporphyrin IX to Mg-
protoporphyrin (Polacco and Walden 1987 J Hered 78:81) but grows well under
lower light levels. Seedling lethal to near normal depending on allele and
background. Kernels homozygous for the dominant mutant Oy1-700 and the recessive
oy1-1040 alleles lose viability within a few months after harvest. Seedling oily
greenish-yellow; viable; fails to convert protoporphyrin IX to Mg-
protoporphyrin; oy1-t tinged green; oy1-1039, oy1-1040 lethal; Oy1-700 dominant
