Germplasm
Description Amylopectin (stained red by iodine) replaces amylose (blue staining) in
endosperm and pollen; extensive allelic series; application: highly branched
starch has gelling properties, used for food gels, adhesives, and other
industrial purposes; SSRs phi022, 027, 061. Opaque endosperm of smooth, firm non-
corneous starch, consisting almost entirely of amylopectin (stains red with
iodine), which replaces amylose (blue staining) in endosperm, and also in the
pollen and embryo sac. Opaqueness not apparent until dry. Encodes starch-granule-
bound nucleotide diphosphate-starch glucosyl transferase (Nelson and Rines
1962). Transposon mutants Ac, Ds, En/Spm, dSpm and Mu. Ac: m7 (McClintock 1963,
1964; Muller-Neumann et al. 1984; Behrens et al. 1984); m9 (McClintock 1963;
Fedoroff et al 1983); B3 (Baran et al. 1992). Ds: m1 (McClintock 1948; Wessler
et al. 1986); m5 (McClintock 1953; Weil et al. 1992); m6 (McClintock 1952;
Fedoroff et al. 1983); m9 (McClintock 1963; Fedoroff et al. 1983); B4 (Wessler
et al. 1987; Varagona and Wessler 1990). En/Spm: 844 (Pereira et al. 1986).
dSpm: m8 (McClintock 1961; Schwarz-Sommer et al. 1984; Gierl et al. 1985). Mu:
Mu8 (Fleenor et al. 1990). Retrotransposon-induced mutations (Varagona et al.
1992). Other inverted repeat insertions: B2 (Bureau and Wessler 1992); W23 RFLP
(Spell et al. 1988). Deletion mutations Wessler et al. 1990. EMS-induced
mutations Briggs et al. 1965; Okagaki et al. 1991. Fine structure genetic map

et al. 1987; Wessler 1991. Methylation of Ac alleles: m9 (Schwartz and Dennis
1986; Schwartz 1989); m7 (Chomet et al. 1987). Wx1+ protein (Shure et al. 1983;
Echt and Schwartz 1981; Schwartz and Echt 1982; Wessler 1991; Klosgen and Weil
1991). (S. Wessler). p-umc25 used to probe umc25(wx). In pollen and endosperm;
not in leaf. Intron(s). This gene was originally curated in MaizeGDB Database
and the map position was displayed on the maize bins map if feasible.
