ID 2349
Name bf1 (GENE SYMBOL)
Synonyms (1) blue fluorescent1
GRAMENE GENEGR:0200051
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Homozygous Bf1 seedlings, and homozygous or heterozygous anthers, fluoresce blue
under ultraviolet light; anthranilic acid accumulates, anthranilate synthase has
altered inhibition kinetics. Mutant expressed as a recessive characteristic in
the seedling and as a dominant in the anthers. When exposed to UV radiation in
dark, both seedlings and anthers of Bf1 homozygote show light blue fluorescence;
when heterozygous, anthers fluoresce light blue while seedling leaves do not but
appear dull red (Normal). Mature Bf1 plants have faint characteristic odor of
accumulated anthranilic acid and derivatives. Accumulated compounds are
heightened by sunlight exposure, but are water soluble; prefer classifying after
sunlight, but avoid washing off anthranilates. Ideal stage is 2-leaf seedling,
strongest fluorescence is on underside of first leaf. Genetic 2005 9 coordinates
determined from these recombination and map data: bk2 -5- v30 -19- wc1 -16- bf1;
wc1 -11- bf1 -4- bm4; bk2 -34- bf1 -4- bm4; see MaizeGDB ID:935548; 105467;
935673. This gene was originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map
position was displayed on the maize bins map if feasible.
