GRAMENE GENEGR:0200471
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Shoot meristem and developing stem specific; dominant Rs1 plants have extreme
ligule disorganization (aka kn2). Dominant Rs1, of spontaneous origin. Formation
of sheath-like tissue at the base of the blade. Tissue at the base of the blade
and top of the sheath highly convoluted and cabbage-like. Husks may also be
affected. Ligule may be discontinuous, reduced or missing. Vasculature of
ligular region disorganized. Leaves often fail to unroll properly. Plants tend
to be short and bent over. Tassels are often pendulous. Phenotype sometimes
apparent on the first several leaves but typically only visible after 8 or so
leaves. (P. Becraft). Kn2 and Rs*-1025 are considered alleles of Rs1-O (Becraft
and Freeling 1994). Mar 96 merged with record for probed site pge(E7) based on
Kerstetter et al 1994. First placed at position 7-0 on the genetic map; remapped
to position 7-10, genetic map (Becraft and Freeling, 1994. Genetics 136:295-
311). mRNA: not in young leaf primordia, older leaves, or root meristems; in
shoot meristem, accumulates at the base of disc of leaf insertion, similar to
knox3, and within domain of kn1 mRNA accumulation; uniform accumulation in
floral meristems; like knox3, but not kn1, accumulates in infloresence stem
ground tissue but not vascular strands. Genetic 2005 7 coordinates determined
from these recombination and map data: csu582 -7- rs1 -8- asg8(myb); see
MaizeGDB ID:934706. This gene was originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and
the map position was displayed on the maize bins map if feasible.
