GRAMENE GENEGR:0200266
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Many variable white stripes and margin patterns on leaves (compare cm1);
conditions chloroplast defects that are cytoplasmically inherited. Many variable
white stripes in seedlings and later leaves, boldest at the margins and base and
at the edges of sheaths; expression varies with background from near-white
seedlings that usually die (Oh51A) to distinctly striped (Mo17) to spiderly
leaves (K55) to grainy with few white stripes (inbred line). Reference allele is
mutable when activated, reverts to normal green (Ij1-Rev). Recessive allele
conditions chloroplast defects that are maternally inherited. Plastid-encoded
proteins and nuclear-encoded thylakoid-associated proteins absent but 33kD
protein of the oxygen-evolving complex and ferredoxin:NADP oxidoreductase are
accumulated at reduced levels. Plastid DNA content normal. Additional or missing
plastid-encoded transcripts; possibly due to alterations in transcriptional or
post-transcriptional processes. Alterations persist in maternal-exception
progeny. Origin of the name is from "Iodent", the variety in which the mutant
was found (Jenkins 1924), combined with "japonica", as previously applied to j1
(which see). 4th intron has rare 5' splice site sequence TTG/GCAA. This gene was
originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map position was displayed on
the maize bins map if feasible.
