ID 1947
Name bn1 (GENE SYMBOL)
Synonyms (1) brown aleurone1
GRAMENE GENEGR:0200060
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Yellowish brown aleurone color. Dominant Bn1, pale yellowish brown aleurone
color, identifiable in combination with colorless endosperm and non-purple and
non-red aleurone, otherwise distinguished by microscopic examination of
sectioned aleurone tissue. The caryopsis is pale yellow and easier to
distinguish when the character is combined with floury or waxy endosperm, the
tint of yellow being dependent upon the texture of the endosperm. Under the
microscope, pigment in aleurone grains appears brownish or yellowish when viewed
with reduced, reflected light. Bn and pale yellow are identical characters. The
brown or pale yellow pigment of the aleurone differs from the strong yellow of
the endosperm, not only in color, but also solubility in a number of solvents
including boiling water. Genetic 2005 7 coordinates determined from these
recombination and map data: v5 -13- ra1 -14- bn1; v5 -7- gl1 -20- bn1; see
MaizeGDB ID:935479; 935478. This gene was originally curated in MaizeGDB
Database and the map position was displayed on the maize bins map if feasible.
