ID 1101
Name fl2 (GENE SYMBOL)
Synonyms (4)
GRAMENE GENEGR:0200168
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Endosperm opaque, soft; dosage effect; encodes an abnormal 24kDa alpha-zein as
deduced from clone. The fl2/fl2/fl2 or fl2/fl2/+ endosperms have an opaque
(chalky) appearance, and there is no corneous starch. The production of zeins
(19 and 22 kD) is markedly reduced and the amino acid content of the collective
proteins is altered when compared to nonmutant endosperms. As with the o2
mutants, the alteration in overall amino acid content results from the
diminished quantity of zeins rather than from a change in the amino acid
composition of the other proteins (Nelson 1980 Adv Cer Sci Tech 3:41). See
complementary gene clf2. (O. Nelson). Not GenBank AY179881, which is for "floricaula/leafy-
like 2 (fl2) gene" = zfl2. This gene was originally curated in MaizeGDB Database
and the map position was displayed on the maize bins map if feasible.
