Germplasm
Description Green seedling develops necrotic lesions at 2-3 leaf stage; lethal. Light olive
green seedling develops necrotic lesions at 2- to 3-leaf stage, which spread to
whole leaf, ending in lethality. Primary deficiency appears to be in guard cell
function. Guard cells slowly degrade, becoming wall vestiges in mature
epidermis; no K+-transfer to guard cells in light from subsidiary cells;
subsidiary cells have normal accumulation of K+ in the dark (photo, Maynard et
al. 1974 AJB 61:580); leaves do not fix CO2 and do not transpire. Isolated
chloroplasts have elevated rates of photochemistry; leaves infiltrated with
bicarbonate have elevated O2 evolution (Bakri 1972 Ph.D. Univ. Ill.; Bazzaz et
al. 1974 Z. Pflanzenphysiol. Bd. 72:181). Levels of thylakoid polypeptides,
including the chlorophyll a/b light harvesting complexes, appear normal (W. Cook
and D. Miles, unpublished). Normal levels of chlorophyll b; early evidence for
absence of chlorophyll b is attributable to the occurrence of chlorophyll b (and
chlorophyll a) as the divinyl species (Wu and Rebeiz 1985 JBC 260:3632), which
produces a red-shifted spectrum. (M. Polacco). Genetic 2005 1 coordinates
determined from these recombination and map data: dek1 -7- nec2; zb4 -5- p1 -9-
nec2; see MaizeGDB ID:60045; 58466. This gene was originally curated in MaizeGDB
Database and the map position was displayed on the maize bins map if feasible.
