ID 74
Name ms12 (GENE SYMBOL)
Synonyms (1) male sterile12
GRAMENE GENEGR:0200345
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Like ms1; affected at microspore vacuolation. Microspores from homozygous ms12
plants undergo normal microspore wall development but arrested nuclear
development. The nucleus becomes smaller with increasing microspore vacuolation
until only well-developed microspore walls remain in the older anthers. Stock:
the original description of ms12 stated that some ms12 plants would exsert a few
anthers, some of which would shed pollen. Cytological observations do not
readily support the hypothesis that ms12 is a partial male sterile. This leads
to some doubt whether the stock currently available as ms12 represents the
originally described ms12, or if the currently described expression is a result
of genetic background differences. (M. Albertsen). Genetic 2005 1 coordinates
determined from these recombination and map data: (ms12 umc1245 ~umc128); see
MaizeGDB ID:640515. This gene was originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and
the map position was displayed on the maize bins map if feasible.
