ID 546
Name wt1 (GENE SYMBOL)

GRAMENE GENEGR:0200599
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Tip of first leaf white and blunt. wt1-N136A seedling emerges with white tip,
later leaves bleach to whitish midvein tissue in middle of lower third of leaf.
Tip of first and sometimes the second leaf are white. Expression is most
pronounced on the first seedling leaf which is white tipped and often blunt. The
area devoid of chlorophyll may vary from only the extreme tip affected to half
or more of the leaf. In extreme cases the second and third leaves may be
affected. (G. Sprague). See Lapsed Locus wt*-N136A for information on
ambiguities from B-A translocation tests. Apparently not expressed in v4
seedlings (Sprague 1990). Crosses involving Les1 and wt1 gave reduced
transmission of wt1 and Les1 (Echt 1987). Genetic 2005 2 coordinates determined
from these recombination and map data: ole1 -4- wt1; wt1 T2-3(6270); (wt1 -0-
umc1026) -6- mmc0401; ole1 -19- wt1 -13- bnlg108 - umc1080; see MaizeGDB
ID:650793; 105658; 882244. Exposure to cold temperatures causes parts of
subsequent leaves up to leaf 6 to be whitened to grainy at the tip or the base
or in the middle, suggesting a "moving window" of cold sensitivity (M.G. Neuffer
11 May 2005). This gene was originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map
position was displayed on the maize bins map if feasible.
