GRAMENE GENEGR:0200293
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Dominant Les1 plants have large necrotic lesions resembling disease lesions
formed by fungal infections on susceptible lines. Dominant Les1 has large,
elliptical, necrotic lesions with a light inner spot of dead tissue, a brown
ring, and an outer ring of watery dying tissue on the leaf blade. Resembles
symptoms of fungal infection on a susceptible line. Lesions first appear near
tip of first leaf at 2-leaf stage and spread down successive leaves to maturity.
Phenotype enhanced by low temperature (22C) and/or W23 background; suppressed by
high temperature (30C) and Mo20W. Lesions appear on each tissue during a
particular developmental stage and may be initiated at that stage by wounding,
propanol, or sunlight (Hoisington et al. 1982 Devel Biol 93:381; Walbot et al.
1983 Genetic Engineering of Plants p 431; Echt and Trese 1989 MNL63:114).
Homozygotes have more extreme expression. Expression excellent at 22C, absent
above 30C. Seedling lethal below 22C; near normal above 30C. Crosses involving
Les1 and wt1 gave reduced transmission of wt1 and Les1 (Echt 1987). Genetic 2005
2 coordinates determined from these recombination and map data: sk1 -3- les1 -4-
wt1; les1 -14- T2-9b wx1; see MaizeGDB ID:934747; 66246. This gene was
originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map position was displayed on
the maize bins map if feasible.
