GRAMENE GENEGR:0200199
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description (was prot1) electrophoretic mobility, null allele is known; embryo protein; SSRs
phi011, 055, 094. Embryo protein mobility variations. Depending on allele,
encodes an embryo-specific storage protein of molecular weight 60,000 to 70,000
(Khavkin et al. 1978 Planta 143:11; Schwartz 1979 MGG 174:233; Kriz and Schwartz
1986 Plt Phys 82:1069). This saline-soluble, water-soluble protein is similar to
the 7S (vicilin) class of seed proteins predominant in dicots. The gene is
highly polymorphic, and several variants have been described, including the
electrophoretic size alleles Glb1-L (Large protein), Glb1-S (Small protein), Glb1-
V (Variant) (Osterman 1988 Biochem Gen 26:463; Kriz et al. 1992 MNL66:109) and
the null allele Glb1-0, which produces no protein. Published nucleotide
sequences include that of a Glb1-S cDNA clone (Belanger and Kriz 1989 Plant Phys
91:636) and genomic clones corresponding to Glb1-L, Glb1-S, and Glb1-0 (Belanger
and Kriz 1991 Genetics 129:863). The glb1 gene is positively regulated by
abscisic acid, ABA, and appears to require both ABA and a functional Vp1 gene
product for expression (Kriz et al. 1990 Plant Phys 92:; Rivin and Grudt 1991
Plant Phys 95:973). (A. Kriz and E. Khavkin). SSR probe p-phi011 was derived
from sequence for glb1, but is shown in MNL 69 on chromosome 6 in error. This
primed sequence is not polymorphic in B73 x Mo17, but maps in Mo17 x H99 RIs on
1L in the same bin as glb1, at the same location as phi055 (L. Senior email to
EHC 3 May 96). Intron(s). This gene was originally curated in MaizeGDB Database
and the map position was displayed on the maize bins map if feasible.
