Description 135 doubled haploid lines derived from a cross IR64 and Azucena were used for
QTL mapping. Plants were planted in the greenhouse at Texas Tech University. The
wax-petrolatum layer system originally development by Yu et al. (1995) was used
to characterize ??e root penetration ability. Total root number (TRN),
penetrated root number (PRN), the ratio of penetrated:total roots (or root
penetration index) and penetrated root thickness were evaluated 60 days after
sowing. The PROC GLM procedure was used to determine association between
molecular markers and root traits bt analyzing the mean of four replictions and
marker data. With the MAPMAKER/QTL, interval mapping was employed to determine
QTLs. A LOD score > 2.0 was considered as threshold to declare significant.
