Description Osmotic adjustment capacity was calculated as the difference in osmotic
potential at full turgor between well-watered and re-hydrated plants. This assay
was repeated two times with three and four replications, respectively. The
osmotic potential of leaf samples was measured with a vapor pressure osmometer.
The assay was carried out on plants 50 days after sowing (DAS). The root
penetration index (RTPNID) and osmotic adjustment capacity were not correlated
(P>0.05). Thus implying that molecular mechanisms of drought tolerance via
osmotic adjustment and or drought avoidance via a good rood root system are
different.
