Description (was Les*-J2552, les29) dominant leaf lesions,early-medium timing, small size,
white color; porphyria. Homozygotes have albino seedlings that tend to necrose
under strong light (G. Johal, 10 Mar 2003). Information on synonymy with Les*-
J2552 and les29, and apparent non-allelism with les28, communicated by G.
Johal, personal communication to MaizeDB 10 Mar 2003. les22 codes for
uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase, and is the fifth enzyme in the C-5 porphyrin
biosynthetic pathway, which is involved in the production of chlorophyll and
heme. Null a mutation in the les22 gene results in the accumulation of
photoexcitable uroporphyrin, causing disease like lesions. . This gene was
originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map position was displayed on
the maize bins map if feasible.
