GRAMENE GENEGR:0200438
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Regulates anthocyanin pathway; dominant R1 (S element) confers function in
aleurone; dominants represented by R1-r or r1-r (P element) confer function in
anthers, leaf tip, brace roots, etc. Dominant R1 controls kernel and plant
coloration by regulating genes coding for enzymes of anthocyanin biosynthesis.
Extensively polymorphic, with most accessions distinguishable based on
distribution, intensity, and timing of coloration. Some alleles are complex,
with separable seed (S) and plant (P) color components defined by mutational and
recombinational analyses. The action of some alleles is subject to change by
allelic association (paramutation) and by pollen vs. ovule transmission
(imprinting). Phenotypic effects overlap with B1. Both R1 and B1 share sequence
similarity with the myc class of DNA binding proteins. (J. Kermicle). Cold
causes an 8-fold increase in r-family trancripts (using an lc1 probe). myc
homologue. This gene was originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map
position was displayed on the maize bins map if feasible.
