GRAMENE GENEGR:0204180
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description (was gef1) recessive eliminates or reduces first leaves, root and shoot apices
aberrant. The phenotype of the mutants is different in different genetic
backgrounds. In the most severe case, it consists of non-germination or early
shoot abortion. In Oh43 background, the mutants display the severe phenotype. In
W23, the phenotype consists primarily of early vegetative phase change and
slightly early flowering. epc1-w23, epc1-1s2p and epc1-nl4 are probably all the
same allele. That is, they have the same very unusual genomic structure (a retro-
element in the first intron and a duplication of a bit of exon 1). They also
have the genomic structure of the "non-mutant" allele in W23 (which is
presumably the progenitor allele). We have not detected any mutations in the
coding region of these mutant alleles, so we don't know why they have a mutant
phenotype. However, it is clear they are all derived from the W23 allele. My
guess is that they are all the same, or related, epc1 mutants. Note that we
found epc1-W23 in Ed Coe's standard W23 stock and this mutation is also present
in some of his W23 converged lines (e.g., most if not all of his anthocyanin
stocks) and in W23 lines from Sarah Hake. My guess is that epc1-W23 is
widespread in maize genetic stocks that have W23 in their pedigree. Its poor
penetrance and subtle phenotype in W23 background allow it to hide out. epc1-mu
and epc1-Mo are unique alleles. (Scott Poethig). This gene was originally
curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map position was displayed on the maize
bins map if feasible.
