ID 2175
Name ms8 (GENE SYMBOL)
Synonyms (1) male sterile8
GRAMENE GENEGR:0200361
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Pollen mother cells degenerate. Homozygous ms8 plants exhibit pollen mother cell
(PMC) abnormalities as early as leptotene of meiosis. A few PMC's complete
meiosis but the resulting microspores degenerate very soon thereafter. Some of
the PMC's that complete meiosis I and II exhibit failure of cytokinesis and
coenocytic quartets are formed. In all cases, degeneration occurs rapidly. (M.
Albertsen). Genetic 2005 8 coordinates determined from these recombination and

curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map position was displayed on the maize
bins map if feasible.
