GRAMENE GENEGR:0200307
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Dominant Lg4 plants lack ligule and auricle but show vestiges sporadically in
blade. Dominant Lg4, no ligule or auricle but with vestiges of these scattered
on leaf blade. Leaves pleated and often have a fluted appearance. Mutant plants
exhibit sporadic regions where blade tissue is transformed into areas with
sheathlike characteristics, including fewer chloroplasts and intermediate veins,
thicker tissue, and epidermal cells which show a sheath-like morphology.
Transformed regions are continuous with the sheath, forming fingerlike
intrusions into the blade which eliminate or displace the normal ligule.
Expressivity and penetrance vary depending on genetic background; enhanced in
W23 and Mo17 and suppressed in B73. Homozygote more extreme in expression.
Isolated in a mutator screen. (J. Fowler). Genetic 2005 8 coordinates determined
from these recombination and map data: fl3 -23- lg4; bif1 -14- pro1 -27- lg4;
umc120 -22- lg4 -3.7- umc89a; see MaizeGDB ID:139008; 66180; 139007. This gene
was originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map position was displayed
on the maize bins map if feasible.
