ID 2171
Name j1 (GENE SYMBOL)
Synonyms (1) japonica striping1
GRAMENE GENEGR:0200271
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description White stripes on leaf and sheath; not often expressed in seedling. Origin of
the name is from Zea mays japonica (mentioned by East and Hayes, 1911) or Zea
japonica (Van Houtte, 1865, Fl. Serr. Jard. 16: 121; also mentioned by
Emerson, Nebr. Agr. Exper. Sta. Ann. Rep. 25, 1912, p. 98). Common name of
this variety is Japanese Striped corn (Fifth Annual Report of the Ag. Exp.
Station, Ithaca, NY 1892. Bullitin XLIX (IX) 434-440). The origin of this line
was reported to be from Japan (Gardeners' Chronicle, 1866, p. 145), but it is
not clear if this was in fact true. However, it is clear that the name
'japonica' reflects this reported origin from Japan. Genetic 2005 8
coordinates determined from these recombination and map data: fl3 -39- ms8 -8-
j1; v16 -12- j1; v16 -14- ms8 -10- j1; see MaizeGDB ID:106337; 60240; 60239.
This gene was originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map position was
displayed on the maize bins map if feasible.
