Name y1 (GENE SYMBOL)

GRAMENE GENEGR:0200603
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Reduced carotenoid pigments in endosperm; some alleles affect chlorophyll in
seedlings (e.g. y1-8549, y1-pb). White endosperm (or pale in some genetic
backgrounds). Reduced carotenoid pigments in endosperm; some alleles affect
chlorophyll in seedlings (e.g., y1-8549). Numerous alleles known which when
grown at high temperature (35C) are pale green (Robertson 1975 J Hered 66:127).
Grown in the field the plants with these alleles are y1-pb(1), y1-wmut, y-
pas8549 and numerous Mutator-induced (y-Mum and y-Mus). Classification by
kernel, seedling and plant is good. Viability is normal for y1, pastel alleles
vary from fair to good. (D. Robertson). Overlapping translocation data place y1
between T4-6(8428)(.28) and T4-6(6623)(.31), and other translocations, along
with l12, which is proximal to l10, ms1, and si1, and between .28 and .31. mRNA
accumulates in embryo, 6x higher than endosperm, of Y1 alleles, but only in
embryo of recessive, y1 alleles (Buckner 1994 MNL68:45). Microsatellite length
variations: CCA repeated 11 times upstream of coding sequence in Y1-Q66/Q67 and
5-11 times in alleles sequenced by Phelps & Bucker (1995). TCATC sequence
directly 5' of CCA repeats is duplicated in 4 of 9 alleles. This gene was
originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map position was displayed on
the maize bins map if feasible.
