Species | Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ] | ||||
Germplasm | |||||
Description | (aka ms4, ms6) repeats 2nd meiotic division in male and female. Complete male sterility, partial female sterility. Female sterility highly variable with genetic background and responsive to selection for increased seed set. Gametophyte dysfunction appears to be due to supernumerary repetitions of meiosis. Chromosomes do not replicate indicating the uncoupling of DNA synthesis and cytokinesis. Chromosomes are distributed to the resulting cells at random and in progressively diminishing number/cell. "Megacytes" and "microcytes" are irregular remanants of supernumerary divisions replacing embryo sacs and pollen, respectively. Cytologically located in the first chromomere of the 6S satellite (Phillips et al. 1977 MNL51:49; West and Phillips 1985 MNL59:106). Questionable allelism with original ms4 or ms6. (D. West & R. Phillips)(see Albertsen 1996). Liu et al 1993 suggest premature haploid divisions, not repeated 2nd meiotic division. Genetic 2005 6 coordinates determined from these recombination and map data: "po1 TB-6Sa; npi340a [~agrp144] -1.6-(umc85,po1)-.5-(mdm1,nor)-.5-bnl6.29a [~csu809]; umc85a-1.9-po1-.03-csu70-.2-(mdm1,nor)-.7- bnl6.29a [~csu809]; see MaizeGDB ID:304905; 106298; 106296.". This gene was originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map position was displayed on the maize bins map if feasible. |
