ID 1399
Name bm1 (GENE SYMBOL)
Synonyms (1) brown midrib1
GRAMENE GENEGR:0200056
Type Gene
Species Zea mays subsp. mays (Maize) [ GR_tax:014546 ]
Germplasm
Description Brown pigment over vascular bundles of leaf sheath, midrib, and blade,
especially evident on the midribs of healthy leaves at flowering; lignin content
at maturity 86% of normal. Lignin modified in color and in polymer constitution
as evaluated by alkaline hydrolysis and other analyses. Feed efficiency in
cattle not improved by bm1 (Barriere et al 1994). Evidence from Halpin et
al.(1998) that cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase activity is severely reduced in
lignified tissues of bm1 plants, and that the map location of CAD clone
corresponds closely with that of bm1. Genetic 2005 5 coordinates determined from
these recombination and map data: a2 bm1 T1-5(8041); bm1 -1- bt1; a2 -7- bm1 -13-
dek33 -21- pr1; see MaizeGDB ID:935738; 935402; 136543. This gene was originally
curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map position was displayed on the maize
bins map if feasible.
