Description Senescence begins at least 2 weeks prior to anthesis, spreading from bottom to
top of plant; occasionally sheds viable pollen. Senescence begins at least 2
weeks prior to anthesis. Chlorosis and necrosis begin at the tip and margins of
the leaves and spread toward the leaf base. Senescence is first seen in the
lowermost leaves and spreads to the top of the plant. Plants are fully chlorotic
and necrotic within 2 weeks after anthesis. Wild-type sectors are occasionally
observed in senescent tissue. Male-sterility is associated with the mutation but
occasionally plants shed viable pollen. (S. Briggs). In B73 background, can be
maintained in homozygous condition; phenotype almost disappears if br2 is also
in the background. This gene was originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and the
map position was displayed on the maize bins map if feasible.
