Description Plants generally lack tassels, have ear shoots but no ear, variable; in some
backgrounds, pubescent, leathery at 4-8 leaf stage; similar to bs1 of Woodworth
and Micu. Homozygous mutant plants generally do not develop tassels, although
ear shoots are produced. Generally no ears develop within the husk tissue.
Mutant seedling often appears more pubescent and darker green with a leathery
texture. Tassel-like structures can be obtained that vary from having only a
couple of spikelets to a more complete-looking tassel. Expression is variable,
especially among progeny from self of a heterozygous cross. Uncovered by TB-1Lc;
near bnl8.29, php15058, php20557, bnl6.32 (in distal third of 1L). Genetic 2005
1 coordinates determined from these recombination and map data: bnl7.25a
(bnl8.29a php15058 tls1 bnl6.32); see MaizeGDB ID:934743. This gene was
originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map position was displayed on
the maize bins map if feasible.
