Chromosome No. 2
Gene Type Not classified
Has Phenotype not curated
Description Affects PSI, PSII, cytochrome bf. Plants homozygous for hcf106 are pale green, non-photosynthetic, and seedling lethal when Mu is in its active phase. However, in Mu-inactive plants, the mutant phenotype is suppressed; i.e., leaves are dark green, and plants are viable (Nolasco & Barkan MNL67). Was hcf*-Mu106; hcf*-106. Pale green seedling lethal. Located by Martienssen to chromosome 2L near umc131 (Burr et al. 1991). Thylakoid ultrastructure similar to loosely stacked cylinders of barley mutant, viridis-a, thylakoids. Deficient in photosystems I and II, cytochrome b6/f; has ATPase, light harvesting complex II, and FNR (Martienssen et al. 1987); has mRNA's for psaA, psaB, psbB, psbA, petA, petB, petD (Barkan et al. 1986). Induced by Mutator (Mu1) insertion upstream of hcf106 promotor (Martienssen et al. 1989a,b). The mutant trait is suppressed in Mutator-inactive lines, apparently by activation of a cryptic promotor within 5'-terminus of the insertion. The hcf106 mRNA levels of the inactivated mutant are enhanced by light and reduced in root and cob, similar to the Hcf106+B73 transcript (Martienssen et al. 1990; Barkan and Martienssen 1991). Classification by hcf trait, excellent; reduced leaf pigmentation, excellent. Viability: seedling lethal at 3-leaf stage. (Polacco). Hcf106 has a close homolog, hcf106c, with which it shares 90% nucleotide sequence identity and 87% amino acid sequence identity; the hcf106c gene product can partially complement a defect in hcf106, resulting in viable and fertile pale green plants (Settles et al. 2001 Genetics 157: 349-360). Genetic 2005 2 coordinates determined from these recombination and map data: csu56c -4- hcf106 -8- umc131; see MaizeGDB ID:934701. This gene was originally curated in MaizeGDB Database and the map position was displayed on the maize bins map if feasible.
