Chromosome No. 9
Gene Type CDS (Protein coding)
Has Phenotype yes
Description Three genes (Sub1A, Sub1B and Sub1C) were identified at the Sub1 (Submergence 1) QTL region near the centromere of chromosome 9. Sub1 QTL is responsible for the phenotype of tolerance to submergence at rice seedling stage. Sub1 genes encode ethylene response factors. The accumulation of Sub1A and Sub1C mRNA was strongly but transiently induced by submergence and reduced on de-submergence in seedling leaves of tolerant indica cultivar FR13A. Notably, Sub1A is absent from the Nipponbare genome. Stable transformation of japonica rice with ectopically expressed Sub1A-1 downregulated Sub1C and confers submergence tolerance.
