Important rice SNP diversity study published

A multi-institutional collaboration recently published the paper, "Genomewide SNP variation reveals relationships among landraces and modern varieties of rice" in PNAS. The study characterized 160,000 nonredundant SNPs, which were used to evaluate the genotypic and evolutionary relationships among 20 varieties and landraces of rice.

Vavilov-Frankel Fellowship call for applications

Two Fellowship opportunities will be available for 2010 to carry out research on conservation and use of Plant Genetic Resources. One of the Fellowships is supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation, Australia.

Applications are invited from nationals of developing countries, aged 35 or under, holding a masters degree (or equivalent) and/or doctorate in a relevant subject area.

CHARM for finding rice SSR markers

A few years ago Greg Wilson, a student in the McCouch Lab at Cornell University, developed a web-based marker search tool called CHARM which greatly simplifies the search for rice SSR markers in a region of interest.

The Plant Ontology Consortium (www.plantontology.org) is seeking applicants for a full-time position of scientific curator who will coordinate the Consortium’s efforts. The Plant Ontology Consortium is a collaboration among researchers at Oregon State University, Cornell University and New York Botanical Garden. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation.

New Gramene Genetic Diversity site

A new and improved Gramene Genetic Diversity website was rolled out today. The major goal of the overhaul was to increase database browsability, which the new 'Database summary' table achieves nicely by offering an overview of data for each species as well as hyperlinks to the data sets themselves. Also new is an area called 'Basic Search' where we will be creating guided searches in order to expand the search options available to users.
