Announcing an opportunity to participate in the 6th International Rice Genetics Symposium and the 7th International Rice Functional Genomics Symposium, November 16-19, 2009 (http://www.ricegenetics.com/).

The journal Bioinformatics has published a brief paper on CMap 1.01: A comparative mapping application for the Internet. CMap was originally written for the Gramene project in 2001 and is freely available at the GMOD site.

The Rice Research Station’s Rice Cam field will be harvested this afternoon (Monday, August 10) weather permitting. This is a foundation seed field of the newly released jasmine variety ‘Jazzman’.

A multi-institutional collaboration recently published the paper, "Genomewide SNP variation reveals relationships among landraces and modern varieties of rice" in PNAS. The study characterized 160,000 nonredundant SNPs, which were used to evaluate the genotypic and evolutionary relationships among 20 varieties and landraces of rice.

Two Fellowship opportunities will be available for 2010 to carry out research on conservation and use of Plant Genetic Resources. One of the Fellowships is supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation, Australia.

Applications are invited from nationals of developing countries, aged 35 or under, holding a masters degree (or equivalent) and/or doctorate in a relevant subject area.

Position Title:    Research Associate (Post Doc)

The Department of Botany and Plant Pathology has an immediate opening for a Research Associate (Post Doc) to work on a cereal plant genome wide gene expression analysis.  This is a full-time, (1.0 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term position working in Jaiswal lab.

A few years ago Greg Wilson, a student in the McCouch Lab at Cornell University, developed a web-based marker search tool called CHARM which greatly simplifies the search for rice SSR markers in a region of interest.

The Gramene Genetic Diversity curator, Genevieve DeClerck, traveled to USDA-ARS Dale Bumpers National Rice Research Center (DB NRRC) in Stuttgart, AR June 15-17, 2009.

The Plant Ontology Consortium (www.plantontology.org) is seeking applicants for a full-time position of scientific curator who will coordinate the Consortium’s efforts. The Plant Ontology Consortium is a collaboration among researchers at Oregon State University, Cornell University and New York Botanical Garden. The project is funded by the National Science Foundation.
