Rice may not seem like an important food to many people from the western hemisphere, but it is a crucial food source for much of the world, along with maize and wheat (see cereal statistics. World consumption of rice has increased steadily (see Figure 1), and therefore rice improvement research is of great importance to world nutrition. In fact, many countries depend upon rice for the majority of their calories (see Figure 2.) In comparison, in the United States the average person consumes an average of 94 calories a day from rice, from 9 kg. year per capita.
