Has Phenotype yes
Description The gene is essential for homologous chromosome synapsis at meiosis I. It encodes a HORMA-domain protein and is an ortholog of Saccharomyces cerevisiae HOP1 (YIL072W) and Arabidopsis ASYNAPTIC 1 (ASY1, At1g67370). The PAIR2 protein associates with axial elements at leptotene and zygotene stages of Meiosis and is removed from the AEs of arm regions when homologous chromosomes have synapsed. It promotes homologous chromosome synapsis.
Curator Comment Studies on histone H3 variant suggest that PAIR2 remains at centromeres until diakinesis, by this time the homologous centromeres are already synapsed. No precocious segregation of either the sister chromatids or kinetochore dysfunction were observed. In the pair2-null mutant, homologous chromosome synapsis is completely eliminated. PAIR2 does not play a role in AE formation, sister chromatid cohesion at centromeres or kinetochore assembly in meiosis I.
