Description The starch branching enzyme (alpha-1,4-glucan: alpha -1,4-glucan-6-glucosyltransferase, E.C.2.4.1.18) catalyzes the synthesis of a-1,6 branching linkages characteristic of amylopectin. Two isoforms of SBE (rice starch branching enzyme) have been characterized in rice, as SBEI, and SBEIII. In Nipponbare, the sequence of a rice gene, sbe1, that encodes a starch branching enzyme diverges extremely from that of sbe2 which is homologous to the bacterial glycogen branching enzyme. The gene, sbe1, is expressed abundantly and specifically in developing seeds, maximally in mid stages of seed development. This expression pattern completely coincides with that of the waxy gene. Three G-box motifs and consensus promoter sequences are present in the 5' flanking region of sbe1, which encodes a putative transit peptide that is required for transport into the amyloplast.
