Description dl1 is a member of the YABBY gene family and is closely related to the CRABS CLAW (CRC) gene of Arabidopsis thaliana. It regulates leaf midrib formation by promoting cell proliferation in the central region of the rice leaf. It also regulates carpel specification. Severe loss-of-function in dl1 mutants causes complete homeotic transformation of carpels into stamens. It is expressed in the presumptive region (carpel anlagen), where carpel primordia initiates. dl1 interacts antagonistically with class B genes and controls floral meristem determinacy.
Curator Comment The two strong alleles of the dl1 locus, drooping leaf-superman1 (dl1-sup1) and drooping leaf-superman2 (dl1-sup2), cause the complete transformation of the carpel into stamens. The intermediate allele dl1-1 (T65), results in an increase in the number of stamens and stigmas, and carpels occasionally show staminoid characteristics. The weakest mutant, dl1-2, bears mostly normal flowers (florets). All four dl1 alleles cause midrib-less drooping leaves.
