Hulls of mature grains are black from pigment in hypodermal cells and trichomes. "Ripening black" is occasionally in glumes in F1 plants and later generations derived from crosses between japonica and indica strains with normal straw-color glumes. The Bh3 (Ph) gene is probably related to phenolase.
